History and Background
Since 1999 I have participated with Will Keepin and Cynthia Brix in a deeply transformational process called Gender Reconciliation. When we are born as infants we are assigned to one of two culturally determined genders and are then raised with certain biases, attitudes, privileges and beliefs about the gender to which you were assigned and the other gender. These culturally derived roles are seldom questioned except when an individual discovers or discloses that they don't completely fit in the gender to which they are assigned and feel limited or confused by the cultural overlay under which they try to indviduate and grow. This is not just true of those who identify as bisexual, homosexual, or transexual but almost everyone has been limited and gifted by being assigned to a certain gender.
What is Gender Reconciliation?
Most psychological research continues to be based on the premise of two genders and continues to look for differences that keep people in the gender box they are assigned. Gender Reconciliation uses a multi-day workshop retreat model to focus on this issue intrapersonally, interpersonally and culturally. After establishing a safe atmosphere, participants move through a series of deeply moving experiences to increase their awareness of how this has impacted them and are given opportunities to experience this new insight through different means of expression and learning. Same gender and mixed gender groups, silent meditation, song, play, and chanting all help to build a spiritual foundation for reconciling all the different aspects of gender within a person's experience, past, present and future.
Who should go?
Anyone who has been "gendered" who is looking to grow personally and spiritually and has felt limited, confined or confused by being assigned to specific roles and behaviors that are male or female. Our workshops are open to men and women over 18 years old and who are mentally and emotionally stable for the work. The workshops are not mental health treatment nor are they a substitute or replacement for medication or psychiatric or psychological treatment. Those questioning whether they would be safe doing the workshop should contact me in advance to discuss issues privately 469-644-3975.
